Producing and Maintaining Category Boundaries

Disobedience was as much an activity bound to being a member of fairy club as being obedient was (in the sense of orienting to Polly’s right to give instructions and following these). As the boss and teacher, Polly not only had the right, but the obligation to monitor the other members’ behaviour, ensure compliance and collective action, and to issue discipline when necessary. The behaviour of naughty students provided for a demonstration of her incumbency as teacher, and as an authority in the club.

Being naughty also offered a way for the other members to do things which breached the restrictions on their activities as students and workers. As a witch as well as a worker, Steven could (to some extent) get away with causing trouble. Little fairy (Oscar), as very young (and as having very limited speaking skills and being prone to running away) could also be expected to legitimately breach the order imposed on the other members. To illustrate, some more of extract 5.5 discussed above is presented. Recall that Polly had said the students could play a game conditional on their being quiet. Following this, Polly leaves to retrieve little fairy and Tara makes a suggestion to Jessie that the two of them ‘fly away like the little fairy’.
